Note-Two Branches of the Van Riper family claim Saddle River Township
as their residence. Jeremiah Van Riper resided on the Passaic River,
above the Dundee Bridge (Garfield), and early purchased land of a very old resident,
named Van Horn. His sons were Simeon, Stephen, and Nicholas(above census),
all of whom remained in the Township. The latter branch is represented by
John N. Van Riper, who is the only member of the family now in the Township (this
information writen around 1890 by Clayton’s “History of Bergen & Passaic County” ).
George Van Riper resided on the homestead now occupied by his son George G. ,
and is the earliest representive of another family of the name in the Township. among
his children where George G., John G., also residing in Saddle River Township;
Cornelius,deceased, and Harry.

In 1868, when the Hudson City Savings Bank was incorporated, Mr. Van Reipen was elected treasurer of that institution, and in 1870 he was made president and treasurer and has presided in that capacity ever since, to the entire satisfaction of stockholders and others interested in the bank.
In 1863 and 1864 he was a member of the New Jersey assembly, and in 1874 and 1875 he was a member of the Jersey City board of finance.

Mr. Van Reipen has been a director in the Hudson County National Bank for a number of years. He is also a member of the American Institute and the Holland Society, of New York City. He is a trustee of the Hudson City Savings Bank,a member of the county board for equalization of taxes,
and has filled that position since 1873, the year of its organization.

He has filled almost every local position of honor and trust, and commands the universal respect of the entire community.
On November 25, 1845, Mr. Van Reipen married Miss Carolina Westervelt, of Hackensack, N.J. Three children have been born to the union, one son and two daughters. He resides in the charming old home of his boyhood days, 553 Summit Avenue, Jersey City Heights.
He is a member of the Bergen Reformed Church, and has been a deacon and elder in that congregation for a number of years…

CARL VAN RIPER has put himself in the front ranks of lawyers in Western Kansas and has developed a large and influential practice at Dodge City. His career has been identified with Western Kansas since early childhood, and he has the spirit of enterprise which is the characteristic of the people of this region.

A native Kansan, Mr. Van Riper was born at Iola December 27, 1879. His father, Joseph Van Riper, now a farmer in Ford County, was born September 2, 1854, in Illinois. Joseph’s father, John, was left an orphan and was reared by a family in Massachusetts. In 1859 he brought his family to Fort Scott, Kansas, but on account of the border troubles in that region, as described on other pages of this history, he moved the following spring to Iola. There he enlisted in the Ninth Kansas Cavalry and was in active service three years in Arkansas, Texas and Mississippi. His record is largely the record of the regiment, which is given elsewhere in this work. He was mustered out without ever having been wounded or captured.

Joseph Van Riper was about five years old when the family came to Kansas, and he grew up and married at Iola. In 1885, when his son Carl was six years of age, he moved to the vicinity of Yates Center in Woodson County, and in the spring of 1887 went to the extreme western portion of the state, to Hamilton County. There he took up a claim and managed to exist, though with extreme difficulty, until 1891. He finally gave up the attempt to prove up his homestead. He encountered the scarcity of water and he found the country poorly adapted to farming. All that region was open land and was chiefly used for grazing cattle. While there he acquired a little stock, and not being able to succeed in farming his only improvements were a sod house and dugout stables, such as the majority of homesteaders had. From Hamilton County he moved to Clark County for two years, and there his efforts as a farmer were more successful. He then bought a half section of land in the southwest corner of Ford County, and has since lived there, having made a well improved farm.

Joseph Van Riper married Delila George, who was born in West Virginia, in 1857, a daughter of J. W. and Jane George. The George family lived for several generations in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and became extensive slave holders. All of J. W. George’s brothers were in the Confederate army, while he was a Union soldier, with a West Virginia regiment of infantry. He saw some strenuous service with the Army of the Potomac at Antietam, second Bull Run, Gettysburg, and was at Appomattox Court House when Lee surrendered and was one of the soldiers who secured a couple of small sections of the famous apple tree under which the terms of surrender were concluded between Grant and Lee. This apple tree has always been famous. It was a massive tree before the surrender, but in half an hour’s time not a particle of it was left, even the roots and ground surrounding them being torn up and carried away for relics. The children of Joseph and Delila Van Riper are: Carl; Frank, a farmer and stock buyer and shipper in Ford County, who is married and has four children; John, a lawyer practicing at Denver, Colorado, married and has one child; and Herbert, who is still single and living at home.

In the several communities of Western Kansas above mentioned Carl Van Riper had his early experiences and acquired an education in the common schools. He graduated from the high school of Dodge City in the spring of 1900, following which he taught school a year at Minneola. In the fall and winter of 1901-2 he was in the business college at Salina, taking the shorthand and typewriting course. Returning to Dodge City, he entered the law office of Button & Scates, old practitioners of the county, and while doing their stenography applied himself diligently to the study of law. In 1905 he passed the successful bar examination and was admitted to practice, and then continued with the firm as an employe. In 1907 he entered upon his duties as county attorney, to which he had been elected in the preceding fall as the successor of Judge Finley. Mr. Van Riper proved a vigorous prosecutor and maintained to the full the record established by his predecessor against law violators, especially in the enforcement of the prohibitory law. Mr. Van Riper served two terms as attorney for Ford County. On retiring from office he formed a partnership with L. H. Madison, and the firm of Madison & Van Riper still exists and handles much of the legal business in the local courts, and Mr. Van Riper has also tried cases before the Supreme Court of Kansas and the Federal Court. While in the office of county attorney his first case was the prosecution of a party for stealing a white mule. After several continuances, and after the prosecuting witness and others had left the country, the case was finally dismissed.

Mr. Van Riper has been a figure in local politics for a number of years, is a republican and cast his first presidential vote for Roosevelt. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School at Dodge City for six years, until he resigned in 1917. He is now a member of the board of trustees of the church. While a great deal may be expected from Mr. Van Riper in the future, since he is still a young man, his success has already been such as to constitute him a prominent lawyer and man of affairs. He owns some wheat land in Morton County and at 801 Fourth Avenue in Dodge City he has a modern home. This home was first built by him in 1905, and in 1916 he remodeled it, making a two-story, eight-room home, with concrete terrace and surrounded by a fine lawn and trees.

On June 21, 1905, Mr. Van Riper married Miss Stella Imel, who was born in Jefferson County, Indiana, July 25, 1877. Her father, P. M. Imel, who was born in the same Indiana County October 24, 1847, is a pioneer merchant at Dodge City but now retired. His father, Thomas Imel, was a Virginian, while the grandfather, Peter Imel, was born in Germany and at an early day came with a brother and settled in Virginia. P. M. Imel married Margerite Lyon, daughter of William and Margerite Lyon, who were early settlers in Indiana, P. M. Imel’s mother was Elizabeth Leatherberry, who died in Ford County, Kansas, in 1897, at the age of eighty-one. Her father, Thomas Leatherberry, came from England. Mrs. Van Riper was a teacher of the primary grade in the Second Ward School in Dodge City for eight years. Mr. and Mrs. Van Riper have one child, Ruth.

The Van Riper family Homestead (also known as the Abraham or The Philip Van
Riper House) began as a small unit built by Jurian Tomassen for his son, Thomas.
The oldest section of the house was built in 1693. Harmen Tomassen Van Riper, the
direct lineage ancestoral grandfather of Harry LeRue Van Riper, bought the house
from his older brother. Harmen’s son, Abraham Van Riper, inherited the house
upon Harmen’s death. Abraham enlarged the house but only lived there part-time,
having owned other properties with homes. At the age of 90,
Abraham divided his property among his children. His second child, Philip,
acquired the homestead and the surrounding farmlands. Harry LeRue Van Riper
was born in this house on April 21,1881. The home remained in The Van Riper
Family until Amy Elizabeth Post Van Riper sold the house in 1909. The house was
still standing in the 1960’s and was/is located on Broad Street in Richfield, New
Jersey. Richfield is a part of the City of Clifton (Passaic County). The facade of the
house was rennovated in the 1890’s with the porch and bay window being added.

THE VAN RIPEN FAMILY

This name with its present multitudinous orthography, is derived from the Latin ripa, and was the name of a city on the North bank of the river Nibbs, sometimes called Nipsick, or Gram. North Jutland ( so called to distinguish it from South Jutland or Schleswig), in Denmark was divided into four dioceses, the most southwesterly part of Cimbri, who, at one time, invaded the Roman Empire.
The city of Ripen, in the diocese of Ripen, is situated in lat. 55°36′ north, and lon. 9°10′ east. Next to Wibourg it is the most ancient town in North Jutland (1). It once had a commodious harbor and profitable commerce; but the one long since filled up and the other sought different channels. Its cathedral was imposing, built of hewn stone, with a steeple of great height, which served as a landmark for mariners.
In the Swedish war of 1645 the city was captured, but recovered by the Danes soon after. From this port, in April, 1663, a vessel named ” T’ Bonte Koe,” The Spotted Cow, sailed for the Netherland, with eightynine passengers, consisting of men, women and children. Among the number was Juriaen Tomassen, a young man of the city of Ripen. About four years after his arrival he m. Pryntje Hermans, May 25, 1667; d. Sept 12, 1695. Some of his descendants took the name Jurianse – now Yereance and Auryansen – while others, taking the name of the city from which their ancestor sailed, became Van Ripen.

(1) Fenning’s Geography ii, 123. In Winfield’s Land Titles, the name is written Rypen. It is thus laid down on a map of Denmark in old geographical work, published in London during the reign of Queen Anne, the title page of which, of the copy I have ,is destroyed. I am now satisfied, from the origin of the word, that the name should be written Ripen, and it is thus written in the text and on a map in Fenning. Every other way of writing it is clearly wrong, though sanctioned by generations.

He was a blacksmith by trade, of little education, but of good sterling sense. During the Revolutionary War he was an unyielding patriot. For a short time he was lieutenaut in the militia. He was taken prisoner by a tory named Van Wart, and locked up in the old sugar house. When brought before the British officer
for examination, his captor and William Bayard. of Hoboken, were present. Van Wart asked him where his rebel coat was. Van Ripen replied. “The coat does not make the man.” The officer asked “What then does? Putting his hand over his heart, the old patriot replied, This, Sir. Colonel Bayard desired to have him held a prisoner but the officer was so pleased with the assurance that he would do the same as often as he was arrested. He was Judge of the Bergen Common Pleas for a number of years after the war. His name appears on many papers and records of his day.

Historical Notes.-The following description of
Saddle River township nearly half a century since,
before its boundaries were materially changed, may
be of interest :
” It is centrally distant northwest from Hackensack Town
eight miles, its greatest length east and west being ten miles,
its breadth north and south eight miles, its area 41,000 acres,
of which about 17,000 are improved. The surface is generally hilly,
the first and Second Mountains of Sussex County crossing the
Passaic and continuing through it. On the east, however,
between the Passaic and Saddle Rivers, there is a neck of
low and level land, the soil red shale and loam the valleys fertile and
well cultivated, and the hills well wooded. Through the valleys flow
several small brooks, such as Singack, Preakness, Krokaevall, Goffle, and
Ackerman’s Brooks.
” Goffle and New Manchester, a part of Paterson, are the chief villages
of the township. The population in 1830 was 3,397. In 1832 there were
741 taxables, 496 householders whose ratables did not exceed $30 in value,
80 single men, 7 stores, 8 gristmills, 1 cotton manufactory, 1 furnace, 10
saw-mills, 13 tan-vats, 2 distilleries, I wool-factory, 506 horses and mules,
and 1324 neat cattle over three years of age. The township paid a State
tax of $364.10, and a county tax of $690.26.”

George Van Riper.—His father, Garret I. Van
Riper, was a farmer at Bergen, in old Bergen County,
N. J. In 1815 he removed to Saddle River township,
where he died Feb. 24, 1821, aged eighty-two ,years.
He had one son, Jeremiah, by his first wife, who in-
herited the homestead at Bergen, and resided there
during his life. His second wife was Antlena Vree-
land, who died Sept. 25, 1819, aged sixty-three years,
leaving one son, George, subject of this sketch.
Garret Van Riper and his second wife were buried
in the graveyard at Paasaic.
George Van Riper was born June 3, 1787, and
during his minority received a good education from
books. He was well learned in civil engineering and
surveying, which, however, he gave little attention to
after his marriage, but he had a natural taste for
mathematics, as books now in possession of the
family, used by him, show much system and neatness.
He was united in marriage, July 23, 1814, to Clarissa,
daughter of George and Jane (Brinkerhoff) Vreeland,
who was born at Pamrapo, near Bergen,(Jersey City)
Dec. 25, 1794, and who survives and resides in
Paterson in 1881.
She is a woman of very retentive memory consider-
ing her age, well preserved in body and mind, and
still entertains socially and hospitably, as has always
been her custom, her many friends and relatives. Mr.
Van Riper and wife, the year following their mar-
riage, settled at Slaughter Dam, (Fair Lawn) in
Saddle River township,N.J., on a farm of some
three hundred acres, a property which his grandfather
George had owned, and which his father had inherited
and given to his sisters, Grietje and Alche.
Mr. Van Riper, who was familiarly known as
“Uncle George,” resided on this farm until his death,
May 23, 1857. He and his wife attended the Ac-
quackanonk Church,, where at different times he
served as elder and deacon. The children of this
union are Garret, born Oct. 16, 1815, died July 20,
1864. He was a farmer in Passaic County, and mar-
ried Martha Maria Romaine, who died, leaving chil-
dren,-Richard and Daniel R. Van Riper, Jane, wife
of Garret Newkirk, of Bergen; Cornelius, born Nov.
6, 1819, resided on a part of the homestead, and died
June 3, 1877, whose wife was Gatharine Jane Marce-
lis, who died Nov. 14, 1875, leaving children,-Clara
Jane and Edo; Helen; John G., born January, 1824,
married Maria Ann Romaine, of Lodi, and has three
children,-Georgianna, Romaine, and Louis P. The
other children of George Van Riper are Hartman
Vreeland, George G., Eliza Ann, and Henry.
Mrs. Van Riper’s paternal grandfather, Vreeland,
resided at Pamrapo, N. J. The Van Ripers, Vree-
lands, and Brinkerboffs are among the families who
trace their descent from an honorable ancestry, who
left their native country (Holland) to avoid persecu-
tion, and settled in this county, where their succeed-
ing generations have contributed to the development
of its various industries, and ranked among the
founders of all the cherished institutions of a free
country.
