The first Derrick or Dirk (Richard) Van Riper,or Van Reypen,was born
in Holland June 9, 1734, and died in Preakness April 24, 1807.
He married Elizabeth Mead May 23, 1762 ,who was born May 26, 1739.
They had children:

1. Uriah, b. March 26, 1763; d. June 10, 1840 ; m. Febuary 12, 1786,
Mary (Polly) Berdan.
2. Jacob, b. January 2, 1765.
3. John, b. August 30, 1766.
4. Henry, b.December 28,1767; d. October 5, 1792.
5. Garret (1) ,July 30, 1769; d. September 1, 1770.
6. Garret (2) , b. November 28, 1771 d. June 2, 1794.
7. Mary, b. July 14, 1775 ; married a man named Lydeker, and
lived at Oakland. She died May 1, 1807.
8. Richard , b. March 4, 1777 ; married Eizabeth Van Orden.
9. Margaret, b. Marh 7, 1779.
10. Elizabeth, b. April 10, 1782.

Daniel ,2nd child of (Cornelius,7th child of Gerrit, 2nd child of Juriaen
Tomassen).
b. June 26, 1736. ; m. Elizabeth Terhune , Oct. 13, 1761 ; d. July 23, 1818 ;
she
b. July 15, 1738 ; d. June 1, 1811. He was a blcksmith by trade, of little
education,
but of good sterling sense. During the Revolutionary War he was an unyielding
patriot.
For a short time he was lieutenant in the malitia. He was taken prisoner by a
tory
named Van Wart, and locked up in the old sugar house. When brought before the
English officer for examination, his captor and William Baynard , of Hoboken
were present. Van Wart asked him where his rebel coat was. Van Ripen replied,
” The coat does not make the man.” The officer asked, “What then does”.
Putting his hand over his heart , the old patriot replied ” This sir!”
Colonel Bayerd desired to have him held a prisoner, but the officer was so
pleased
with him that he discharged him with the assurance that he would do the same
as often as he was arrested. He was Judge of the Bergen Common Pleas for a
number of years after the war.His name appears on many papers and records
of his day.

Daniel and Elizabeth Terhune had children:

1833.
2. Cornelius, b. May 23, 1767 ; m. 1st , Elizabeth Vreeland; marriage bond dated

Jan. 20, 1787; 2nd, Vrouwtje, daughter of Garrebrant
Gerritsen, of
Slotterdam (Fair Lawn); she died Sept. 19, 1806 ; 3rd ,
Aeltje Van Horn,
widow of Michael Van Houten , May 31, 1807; died Jan. 6,
1842.
3. Derrick (Richard), b. Aug. 28, 1772 ; m Jenneke Vreeland, Oct. 1792; d. July
3, 1851.
